The third millennium, and the 21st century, begin with January 1, 2001
(not 2000). Reason: year counting in the Gregorian calendar (the
calendar all this fuss is about) began with year one (not zero). The end
of 1999 marked only the end of the 1900s (which was not the end of the
second millennium nor of the 20th century). Because the rightmost digit
of the first year of the first century and of the first millennium is a
one, the rightmost digit of every new century and new millennium of the
Gregorian calendar must be a one. For an official reference, please see
